4th - 6th September

Children from Year 5 and 6 enjoyed visiting CHET for our annual residential trip. The weather was glorious, the children had a brilliant time; raft building, orienteering, fencing, model making, climbing and taking part in archery, the high and low rope challenge and problem-solving.

YEAR 5 SCIENCE

 Living Things and Their Habitats.

We have talked about how bulbs can reproduce both sexually and asexually.  We dissected some bulbs and discovered how they store their own food to help them to grow. We then planted bulbs in a bulb 'lasagne'. We are looking forward to seeing our bulbs bloom in the spring.  Once we have enjoyed the flowers, we will be able to dissect the flowers to see how the flowers can also reproduce sexually.

Nuts For Trees
Year 5, are also taking part in the national Nuts For Trees project.  We've been busy identifying different types of tree seeds.  We sorted and classified tree seeds into Fleshy Fruits, Nuts, Cones and Winged Seeds. Then we planted a variety of each. We'll be taking good care of them over the coming year and hope to see them develop as seedlings in the spring.

History

World War One

Year 5 has been learning all about WW1.  We have learnt about soldiers leaving Britain for the front lines.  We learnt about the Triple Entente (the Allies) and the Central Powers, and halos thought about the long- term causes and the short-term causes of the war.  We then learnt about Lord Kitchener and his national recruitment campaign.  In particular, we learnt about Lord Derby, and his idea to form PALs Battalions.  We learnt  the Liverpool King's Regiment was one of the first PALs Battalions to be recruited in Britain.  Finally, we learnt about the role of women during WW1. We then took our learning out into our local community and the city of Liverpool.  We visited Bootle War Memorial, and learnt about the Sefton soldiers, some of whom were awarded the Victoria Cross.  We also visited the PALs memorial plaque in Lime Street Station. After that, we went to explore the WW1 exhibits in the Liverpool Museum.

ART

Our art topic for Autumn Term is linked with our history topic.  We learnt all about Rae Smith, who is a set designer. She designed the set for the WW1 play War Horse.  Inspired by her ideas, we set to work to create sets for an imaginary WW1 production about life in the trenches.

PE

In PE we have been exploring our school orienteering course.  The children enjoyed completing lots of challenges.  They are starting to use maps really, setting them to land and navigating their way around the grounds.  We have also explored working as gymnasts. Everyone really enjoyed getting out the large apparatus.  We have also really achieved working hard in our groups to perform gymnastic routines on low apparatus; our routines needed to include rotation, balance, counter-balance, flexibility, travel and different body heights.

Spring Term

Please have a look at our curriculum map for the Spring Term. You can see what the children will be learning and how you can support their learning at home.
